As the founder and CEO of Theranos, she claimed her company's machines could run dozens — and eventually hundreds — of diagnostic tests from a single finger prick, quickly and cheaply. The Reality: Third-Party Machines and Voided Results
The truth came out in October 2015, when Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou published an investigation revealing that Theranos was running most of its tests on commercially available machines made by other companies — not on the Edison devices it had marketed. The report also said the Edison machines themselves might provide inaccurate results.
Whistleblowers such as Tyler Shultz, a former Theranos employee and the grandson of board member George Shultz, were key sources for the story. The company fought back, denying the allegations and sending lawyers after sources, but regulators soon piled on. From Billionaire to Conviction: How Theranos Collapsed
At its peak in 2013 and 2014, Theranos was valued at $9 billion, and Holmes's stake was estimated at $4.5 billion — making Forbes name her the youngest self-made female billionaire in America.
