Hair Washing Hacks To Take Your Locks Up A Notch

Washing your hair: a task so simple, you might not ever give it a second thought. But if you want your tresses to look their absolute best, it's worth rethinking how you scrub that scalp.

Is your hair fine, thick, natural, or dyed? Choose shampoos and conditioners that are formulated specifically for hair like yours to avoid problems like build-up, frizz, or a weighed-down look. For example, if you have curly hair, look for extra hydrating products. If you have thin hair, products that are lightweight and designed to add volume are your friends. Do you color your hair or use special treatments, like keratin or relaxers? Look for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that are designed to repair damage and put moisture back into your strands.

Don't be stingy when you rinse. Neglecting to adequately rinse out all of the product you scrub up with in the shower can lead to serious build-up on your scalp and less-than-ideal hair days.

  • Before you apply any shampoo, make sure your hair is totally soaked through with warm water to loosen up any oil, dirt, or leftover product, and to open up your hair cuticles so they're more receptive to products.
  • Next, gently massage shampoo into your scalp and strands, then rinse it out fully until any extra residue is gone (this could take a few solid minutes of good rinsing).
  • Finally, move on to conditioner, gently applying it from the middle of your strands down to the ends, gently combing through with either your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, then rinse thoroughly, but with cold water this time. The cooler water temperature helps seal in all the nutrients from your conditioner so your hair will look healthy and feel soft and smooth.

How often you need to wash your hair depends on factors like your level of activity, hair type, and personal preferences for how you like to style your hair. A good rule of thumb is the more oily your hair is, the more frequently you should give it a good wash (likely on a daily basis). If you have dry, coarse, or especially textured hair, you won't need to wash as often — a weekly scrub should get the job done. Similarly, if you have chemically treated or color treated hair, you may choose to wash less often in order to preserve the results of your treatment for as long as possible.
